If your car’s registration has lapsed, you can still donate it in Seattle. In most cases, expired tags are not a problem at all. RideRebirth can accept vehicles with overdue or expired registration, as long as the car has a valid Washington title in your name. You don’t need to pay back registration fees or renew the tabs just to donate. We’ll arrange a free tow from anywhere around Puget Sound and you still receive your tax-deductible receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind.
Here’s how it works in Washington: the DMV cares about who owns the vehicle, not whether the stickers are current at the moment you donate. As long as your WA title is clear and signed correctly, RideRebirth can complete the donation, even if the car hasn’t moved from your driveway in Ballard, Beacon Hill, West Seattle, Tacoma, or Everett in years. The tow truck comes to you, so a non-running, unregistered vehicle is fine. After pickup, responsibility for the vehicle shifts away from you. You’ll just file a simple Report of Sale with the Washington Department of Licensing so the state knows it has been transferred, protecting you from future tickets or tolls.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have your Washington title
Find your WA Certificate of Ownership (title) and confirm it’s in your name with no buyer already filled in. The registration card and expired tabs aren’t what matter here—the title is. Even if your car has been sitting in Capitol Hill or Shoreline with dead tags, a valid title usually means we can move forward.
2. Call or submit our online donation form
Tell RideRebirth that your registration is expired and share the basic vehicle info: year, make, model, and whether it runs. We’ll confirm that expired tabs won’t block your donation in Washington and answer any questions about fees, towing, or title issues specific to your situation in the Seattle area.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere around Puget Sound
Pick a day and time that works for you. Our towing partners can meet you at home, work, or a storage lot in places like Bellevue, Kent, Lynnwood, or Burien. The vehicle does not need to start or be driven. Towing is always free to you, even if your car has sat unregistered for years.
4. Sign the title and hand the keys to the driver
On pickup day, you’ll sign the title where we’ve instructed you in advance. The driver will guide you if you’re unsure. Once the tow truck pulls away, RideRebirth and Heritage for the Blind take over responsibility for the vehicle, not you—even if the old plates still have expired tabs on them.
5. Notify Washington DOL and keep your receipt
After pickup, file a Report of Sale with the Washington Department of Licensing (online or at a local office in Seattle, Renton, or Federal Way). This step lets the state know the car is no longer yours. Then watch your mail for your tax-deduction receipt from RideRebirth supporting Heritage for the Blind.
6. Claim your tax deduction at filing time
You’ll receive a tax receipt of at least $500, and if the vehicle sells for more, you’ll also receive the documentation required for IRS Form 1098-C. Share this with your tax professional or keep it with your records so you can claim your charitable deduction when you file.
Potential complications to watch for
Name on the title doesn’t match the current owner
Tip: If the car is still titled in a previous owner’s name or in a relative’s name who has passed away, expired registration isn’t the main issue—ownership is. In those cases we may need extra documents (like a signed title from the current legal owner or estate paperwork) before we can accept the donation.
Lienholders or loans still listed on the title
Tip: If a bank or finance company is still shown on the title, we might need proof the loan is paid off or a lien release before completing your donation. This is separate from registration status. Have any payoff letters or lien-release documents ready when you contact us so we can move things along quickly.
Missing Washington title or only having registration papers
Tip: Registration cards and insurance proof are not enough for a donation transfer in Washington—you really need the title. If you’ve lost it, you can usually request a replacement title through the Washington Department of Licensing. We’ll walk you through what to ask for so you don’t waste time or extra trips.
Tickets, tolls, or parking issues tied to your plates
Tip: Expired tabs don’t stop us from towing, but unresolved tickets or tolls tied to your license plate might still follow you if the DOL thinks you’re the owner. That’s why filing a Report of Sale right after pickup is crucial in Washington—it helps separate you from any future fines or notices on that vehicle.
